BETHANY, OK (November 28, 2012) – Dr. Marty Alan Michelson continues as a Professor at Southern Nazarene University as he engages new opportunities for SNU School of Theology and Ministry students. Dr. Jerry Pattengale, nationally-engaged educator & scholar and Director of the Green Scholars Initiative, announced that Dr. Michelson was selected to serve as the Coordinator of Jewish Scrolls for the world’s largest privately held collection of ancient texts related to the Bible, the Green Collection.
The Green Scholars Initiative (GSI), named for the Green family (Owners of Hobby Lobby & other affiliate stores), is assembling world-class scholars to work with texts from the Bible. The GSI, reflecting the vision of the Green Family, works to engage scholars who are connected to young people in order to mentor the next generation of Bible Scholars. While maintaining his role at SNU, Michelson has begun to assist the GSI team to connect people around the world.
As Michelson begins his work with the Green Collection, he has already engaged meetings in the U.S. and Internationally. This Fall, traveling with Dr. Pattengale and Cary Summers, COO of the Museum of the Bible , he assisted at meetings with some of the most important Bible institutions in Israel, including: l’École biblique et archéologique française de Jérusalem, the Israel Museum, The W. F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research (formerly the American School of Oriental Research), the Bible Land Museum, the National Library of Israel, and a meeting with the personal adviser to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Pattengale said about Marty, “When we began to look for people to assist us with this wonderful journey, we looked for competent scholars and committed educators. And, when possible, those with a like-minded interest in the text we are collecting and studying. While studying scholars’ profiles in the Oklahoma region (our home base), we came across this gregarious Hebrew teacher who had just held an award in Oxford. And, he had a pleasant sense of humility that goes a long way in this arena.”
Dr. Hal Cauthron, chair of the School of Theology & Ministry at SNU says, “We are pleased that Professor Michelson is recognized for his scholarly achievement. Marty is committed to mentoring our students in faithful study of the Bible and his participation with the Green Scholars Initiative and the Museum of the Bible fit well with our mission in the School of Theology and Ministry. Marty's work expands existing opportunities for our students to develop as Christian disciples engaging the Bible for the sake of the world."
Michelson notes, "The Green's are sharing precious resources for all persons interested in the Bible. It is a delight to share their vision & mission as I work with established scholars & existing staff and the emerging, bright, student scholars. This affiliation brings connection to universities, libraries and museums around the world. I plan to be a faithful steward in my work with the Green Collection and the Green Scholars Initiative.”
Southern Nazarene University's mission is to transform lives through higher education in Christ-centered community. As a Christian community of scholars, we model the hospitality of grace, the pursuit of truth and the practice of discipleship, all within the Wesleyan-holiness tradition, as we prepare graduates who THINK with clarity, ACT with integrity and SERVE with purpose.
