BETHANY, Okla. — Over the course of the next few years, the athletics department, as well as the campus of Southern Nazarene University, will undergo a large shift in the direction of its future.
One of the new paths that Southern Nazarene will travel this year will be the school's induction ceremony of the inaugural SNU Athletic Hall of Fame, a tradition that the SNU athletic department hopes to make an annual event. Saturday, Nov. 12th is the set date for the induction ceremony.
For several years, the SNU athletic program has been researching the prospect of beginning the Athletic Hall of Fame. A final decision was made during the fall of 2010 that started the ball rolling on concrete plans to begin developing ideas, defining criteria for nominees and acquiring names for possible inaugural inductees. The focus on SNU athletics during this year's Homecoming presented a plausible deadline and perfect opportunity for completion of the first selection process and to dub the first set of inductees official pieces of SNU athletic history.
Nominations for this year's inaugural inductees were made primarily by the current coaches in various SNU athletic programs and by former students, staff or fans who possess a broad knowledge of SNU's athletic history. These individuals formed the nomination committee, developed a list of names and sent the nominations to a selection committee of 10 members chaired by the SNU Director of Athletics, Bobby Martin.
“It is wonderful to be able to bring together historical and present figures that make SNU athletics successful,” said SNU Director of Athletics Bobby Martin. “I have enjoyed looking back on the rich history of SNU athletics and reminiscing on past successes while looking forward to making new impressions in athletic history.”
This year's induction ceremony will take place during the All-Alumni Dinner of Homecoming weekend and will feature the induction of 11 inaugural Hall of Fame members, who represent four different categories. Outstanding Leaders include Dr. Wanda Rhodes, Mr. David Baker, Carl and Marcia Sawyer and Claud and Betty Cypert. Women's Basketball inductees are Astou Ndaiye and Katrina Springer. Todd Thurman and Jeff Jantz are Men's Basketball inductees. Wes Harmon, Ayodelle “Steph” Miller and Patty Avalos represent Women's Soccer, Men's Soccer, Track and Women's Soccer, respectively.
“As pioneers in their own sports and in leadership that built the athletics program into what it is today, every one of the selected members deserves to be honored in the SNU Athletic Hall of Fame,” Martin said.
Alumnus, former SNU athlete and former SNU Sports Information Director, Toby Rowland will serve as the ceremony's emcee. A two time Emmy Award winner and former Oklahoma City KWTV sports anchor, reporter and producer, Toby is the current "Voice of the Sooners" for the University of Oklahoma.
