BETHANY, Okla. (November 9, 2010) - Southern Nazarene University alumnus Randy Swanson (’80) has been named chief of staff by Congressman-elect James Lankford. Swanson will serve in the 5th Congressional District office.
Swanson graduated in 1980 with a degree in speech communication. Swanson commented by saying, “my time in the SNU speech department developed a heart and a mindset that you can do anything you want if you are passionate about something and pursue that passion in accordance with God’s will. I spent countless hours in my advisor’s office during my years in the department, discussing and dreaming about the direction of my education and my life, and I graduated with the conviction that I could be a difference maker in whatever direction my life took. I had many passions, and hadn’t zeroed in on one by the time I graduated. I was presented an opportunity in the political process in 1985, and have had quite a ride since. I’ve learned that if you let God write your story, the chapters will come in the right order and provide a compelling narrative.”
Swanson has worked for the Senate the past two years as director of communications for the Senate Republican leaders. He previously served as press secretary and chief of staff for Rep. Frank Lucas, R-Okla. He was also an administrative aide to then-Corporation Commissioner J.C. Watts and worked in the private sector as a public relations professional and government affairs specialist.
“I’ve had a lot of great and very memorable experiences, and have had a role in making history in Oklahoma more than once over the years with some great and transformational leaders. That’s very gratifying. And now, being asked to serve as Chief of Staff for Congressman-elect James Lankford. This is a man who has let God write a very unique story in his journey. It’s a daunting challenge, but I think we can pull it off working with a driven group of like-minded leaders. I’m excited to get started and meet our fellow freshman members of Congress and the veteran members who share the vision to see where we can go together,” said Swanson.
