BETHANY, OK (April 20, 2012) – Southern Nazarene University will be participating in World Book Night by serving as a distribution center for this event.
World Book Night is an annual celebration designed to spread a love of reading and books by giving out free World Book Night paperbacks. The event will be held across the U.S. as well as the U.K. and Ireland on April 23, 2012. Faculty, staff and students from SNU picked up their books on Thursday, April 19th to prepare for this big event.
The idea to get involved in World Book Night came from a current SNU student, “I thought it would be an awesome way for SNU students to get involved in our community. I sent the information about the event to our Librarian, Arlita Harris, asking if she would be willing to be a distributor. She took my idea and ran with it,” stated senior Julie Lyles.
On April 23rd, these volunteers will distribute their books to light or non-readers in the community as a way to encourage literacy. To make this possible, authors are foregoing royalties, and American book publishers, the American Booksellers Association, Barnes Noble, the American Library Association, the Association of American Publishers, Ingram Book Company, UPS, and a dozen printers and binders have paid for the production and shipping.
“I chose to be part of world book night because of how much I personally had enjoyed several books on this list. I've always enjoyed reading, and jumped at the chance to share a book with others that had meant so much to me,” said senior McCall Adams.
World Book Night hopes to promote the value of reading, of printed books, and of bookstores and libraries to everyone year-round through social media and traditional publicity.
