BETHANY, OK -- Southern Nazarene University (SNU) is proud to announce the following three individuals who have been approved by the Southern Nazarene University Board of Trustees to receive honorary degrees. David A. Busic, Doctor of Divinity, John Michael Crabtree, Doctor of Humane Letters and Walliere Pierre, Doctor of Divinity. The three honorees will be recognized in the commencement ceremonies in the Sawyer Center on the campus of Southern Nazarene University located at 39th Expressway and Donald on Saturday, May 15, 2010.

DAVID A. BUSIC

David Busic serves on the General Board for the Church of the Nazarene and is President of the USA National Board. He is a member of the Board of General Superintendent’s Thought Partners, the Northwest Oklahoma District Advisory Board, and the Southern Nazarene University Board of Trustees. In 2007, David helped initiate the Swaziland Partnership to help reduce the HIV/AIDS rate and to assist children in Swaziland, Africa.

Rev. Busic is the co-author of two books: A Pastor’s Guide to Effective Preaching and Sharing My Faith, and was also co-editor of Preacher’s Magazine: A Preaching Resource in the Wesleyan Tradition from 2000-2007.

Rev. Busic earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Southern Nazarene University, his Master of Divinity degree from Nazarene Theological Seminary, and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Ministry degree in Theology and Culture from Fuller Theological Seminary.

Rev. Busic is currently serving as the Senior Pastor at Bethany First Church of the Nazarene. He and his wife, Christi, have been married 27 years and have three children: Megan, Ben, and Madison.

JOHN MICHAEL CRABTREE
J. Michael Crabtree received his B. Music Ed and M.A. in Language Arts from SNU in 1972, and 1976, respectively. He served as SNU’s first full-time Sports Information Director from 1971 until 1980. In 1980 he assumed the role of Alumni Director. In 1989, he was named VP of University Advancement, which evolved into his current role as Assistant to the President for Endowment Development & Planned Giving.

Mr. Crabtree’s life has revolved around a philosophy of “friend-raising,” a concept impressed upon him during his senior year when a benefactor paid his bill to keep him in school. “That single event changed my life,” Crabtree states, “and the greater SNU community became my family away from home.” In an attempt to repay that investment, Crabtree has focused his passions on the raising of Scholarships and Endowments, now totaling more than 375 funds valued in excess of $12.5 million.

He married SNU alumna, Cheryl Wallace Crabtree, in 1974. They are members of Bethany 1st Nazarene Church. They enjoy traveling (especially to Great Britain), and have opened their home to more than a dozen SNU students who needed support to stay in school.

WALLIERE PIERRE

Rev. Walliere Pierre and his wife, Elda, are the parents of five children. Rev. Pierre is the national coordinator for Nazarene Compassionate Ministries in Haiti. In the days following the devastating earthquake in Haiti in early 2010, he became the voice of the Haitian people to Nazarenes around the world.

Rev. Pierre is a member of the Nazarene General Board and in 2009 he was honored at the Nazarene General Assembly with a “Heroes Among Us” award for facilitating the launching of feeding programs, youth soccer leagues, agricultural projects, micro-lending programs, medical clinics, AIDS prevention activities and water projects.

Rev. Pierre is a graduate of the Séminaire Théologique Nazaréen d’Haiti and former pastor of what at the time was Haiti’s largest Nazarene church. In addition to his pastoral ministry and his work with NCM, he has taught for the last 20 years at the Séminaire. Rev. Pierre has a great heart for the people of Haiti, in part because he spent a portion of his childhood as a "restavek," Haiti’s version of child slavery.

Southern Nazarene University's mission is to transform lives through higher education in Christ-centered community. As a Christian community of scholars, we model the hospitality of grace, the pursuit of truth and the practice of discipleship, all within the Wesleyan-holiness tradition, as we prepare graduates who THINK with clarity, ACT with integrity and SERVE with purpose.
