Southern Nazarene University recommended for full NCAA Division II Membership

BETHANY, OK (July 11, 2014) - While the process is not complete, a major step has been taken in the Provisional and final stage of the NCAA Division II Membership process for Southern Nazarene University.

The NCAA Membership Committee made the recommendation for Southern Nazarene University to be moved to active membership, and the last step of the three-year membership process rests on the final decision of the Management Council. That decision will be announced July 22.

“We are thrilled to hear the news that Southern Nazarene University has been recommended for full member status in the NCAA Division II,” said Dr. Loren Gresham, President. “There are many parts to this process, and multiple entities across campus need to be commended for their hard work. We feel that this is a great move for the life of athletics at SNU and for the connection and pride across campus. We look forward to the years ahead and the ability to share what we represent among our fellow members.”

If SNU is approved for full membership status, the Crimson Storm would be eligible for postseason play in both the NCAA and Great American Conference (GAC). SNU would have the ability to compete in all GAC conference tournaments and would have the opportunity for automatic bids into NCAA National Tournaments. The men’s soccer program would also be eligible for MIAA postseason play.

“We are excited for our coaches and student-athletes, and look forward to what this announcement means to our campus,” said SNU Director of Athletics Bobby Martin. “There have been numerous hours spent in creating policies and procedures, and through this process we learned a lot about our department, the dedication of our coaching staff, and our dependence upon God. We have high expectations and can’t wait for the opportunity to compete for conference titles and NCAA postseason play. We are extremely thankful for the hard work of our coaches and staff during this transition. We are grateful to a campus community of faculty, staff and student body for embracing this process and supporting us every step of the way. We could not have accomplished this without them.”

Over the last two years SNU has had several high finishes among the Great American Conference across a handful of sports. The Crimson Storm shared a regular season title in women’s tennis and claimed an individual championship in men’s golf by Michael Hearne as the team finished third. Both men’s and women’s basketball have finished in the top three in one of the past two seasons and women’s soccer has finished in the top three in each of the past two seasons.
