The Office of Church Relations at Southern Nazarene University will host a sermon planning workshop for area pastors on Monday, January 10, 2005, from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Royce Brown Business Building, located off of NW 39th Expressway and Peniel on the SNU campus. The workshop is open to pastors of all denominations and will feature presenters Dr. Jeffrey Johnson, Rev. Marty Michelson, and keynote speaker Rev. Jeren Rowell.
“Preparing to preach on a weekly basis is one of the greatest challenges of pastoral ministry. The people in the pews need to hear God’s Word preached in a way that challenges the mind and touches the soul,” said Dr. Terry Toler, Vice-President for Church Relations. “We have assembled a seasoned and diverse group of resource people for the 2nd Annual Sermon Planning Workshop in hopes of equipping pastors with fresh inspiration and new ideas for preaching that will enable them to communicate the Word of God more clearly and powerfully.”
Rev. Jeren Rowell serves as Senior Pastor of the Church of the Nazarene in Shawnee, Kansas. Prior to his current assignment, he served as Associate pastor for twelve years in Idaho, Kansas and Illinois. He is a graduate of Northwest Nazarene University and Olivet Nazarene University. Rowell is a frequent speaker in churches, workshops, seminary classes, retreats and marriage enrichment events. He is a writer and editor for two periodicals in the Church of the Nazarene: “The Communicator” and “Preacher’s Magazine.” Rowell will lead two sessions on “Four Key Questions for Sermon Planning” and “Tools for a Sermon Planning Retreat.”
Dr. Jeffrey Johnson is the Senior Pastor of Houston First Church of the Nazarene. He has served as pastor, executive pastor and youth pastor in Tennessee, Iowa and Oklahoma. Johnson is a graduate of Trevecca Nazarene University, Nazarene Theological Seminary and Asbury Theological Seminary. Johnson will be accompanied by Sean Patrick, Worship Pastor of Houston First Church of the Nazarene and co-founder of Tri-Vid Video Production Company.
