Bobby Martin Steps Down as SNU Head Men's Basketball Coach
(BETHANY,OK)---Southern Nazarene University President Dr. Loren Gresham announced on Thursday that Head Men’s Basketball Coach Bobby Martin has resigned his duties as Head Men’s Basketball Coach. Martin is resigning to serve full-time as Director of Athletics for Southern Nazarene University. The change is effective immediately.
"No person in SNU intercollegiate athletics 40 year history has made a more significant contribution than Coach Bobby Martin,” said SNU President Dr. Loren Gresham. “His contribution to building lives on a solid foundation has impacted hundreds of student athletes. I am pleased to have him continuing in the strategic position of Athletic Director for the future."
Bobby Martin began his coaching career at Mount Vernon Nazarene College in 1976, where he was the head men’s basketball and baseball coach for three seasons. Martin then moved back to his alma mater in 1979 and became the Director of Athletics and an assistant to Dr. Loren Gresham on the men’s basketball coaching staff.
In 1986, Martin was named the head coach for the men’s varsity program, a post he has held the past 17 seasons. During his coaching career at SNU, Martin has amassed a record of 336-222, a winning percentage of (.602). Martin has twice been named the Sooner Athletic Conference Coach-of-the-Year in 1986 and 1998. In 1998, Martin led the Crimson Storm basketball program to the NAIA National Runner-Up trophy and was named the NAIA, NABC National Coach-of-the-Year for his efforts.
“The memories that I have are centered around the young men that I’ve had the honor of coaching for the past 17 years,” said Bobby Martin. “My tenure as basketball coach has been rewarding, but I now look forward to focusing all of my efforts as the Athletic Director.”
In his 17 years at the helm of the Crimson Storm men’s basketball program, Martin was the all-time winningest coach in SNU Athletics’ history. Martin is the first coach in school history to produce 300 plus wins in any sport.
