Dr. Larry Mills to speak at Winter Commencement

Dr. Larry W. Mills, SNU School of Business Chair, will be the featured speaker at the Southern Nazarene University winter commencement ceremony, 2:00 pm, Saturday, December 14, 2002, in the Sawyer Center on NW 39th Expressway and Donald.

Larry Mills, Chair of the Southern Nazarene University School of Business since 1989, has served in the classroom since 1969. He earned the B.S. degree from Southern Nazarene University in 1966; the MBA from the University of Oklahoma, 1969; and the Ph.D. in Management from the University of Oklahoma, 1978. He also holds the CMA from the Institute of Management Accounting, 1981; and Oklahoma Insurance License (AFLH).

An Iowa native, Mills served in the Oklahoma Army National Guard, 1966-72. He assisted/coached SNU men’s varsity basketball, 1967-71. He and the late David Baker (Mills’ coach, mentor, and close friend) founded a sportsmanship tradition that spread nationwide. He later became known as the “Voice of SNU Basketball,” broadcasting men’s and women’s games from 1982-99.

After developing the Management program, Mills originated computer laboratory/computer curriculum integration and pioneered a teaching approach using experiential exercises, gaming, computer integration, lecture, discussion, current news and small group interaction. He has served as advisor for SNU’s Intercollegiate Management Gaming Teams, competing in the International Collegiate Business Strategy Competition since 1987. SNU captured titles in 1987, 1992, 1994-97 and 2000.

Mills has served as Student Government Association Advisor, Faculty Athletic Representative, and on numerous committees. He is a sought after speaker for civic clubs, churches and schools, and has presented numerous seminars on behavioral issues in management, time management and personal finance. He has directed a seminar on Japanese Management on campus, as well as to Fleming, Xerox, and other corporations. He is also a small business consultant. Mills received the Outstanding Alumni Award, 1973; Excellence in Teaching Award (by SNU students) in 1987; University Award in 1995, and recently was honored with the establishment of the Larry Mills Meritorious Service Award.

A member of Beta Gamma Sigma, National Business Honor Society, University of Oklahoma; Delta Mu Delta, National Business Honor Society, SNU; American Management Association; Institute for Management Accountants/National Association of Accountants; and Christian Business Faculty Association, Mills is also a member of Bethany First Church of the Nazarene and is actively involved in Angel Tree, a ministry of Prison Fellowship.

Mills and his wife, Judy, live in Oklahoma City. They have a daughter, Cindy Aplanalp and husband Rory, Houston, Texas; son, David, Plano, Texas; and grandchildren, Whitney, Dakota, Rian, Danielle, Shilo and Madison.
