Retired Vice President of Business and Financial Affairs
BETHANY, OK -- Don Billings, 71, went to be with our Lord and his beloved wife on Thursday, November 1, 2007. Don had recently retired from his more than 25 years of service at Southern Nazarene University as Vice President of Business and Financial Affairs.
“Don gave himself to God and Kingdom work, both at SNU and his church, the rescue mission, and other places where God led him,” said SNU President, Loren Gresham. “His devotion to this university was exemplary. It was his main expression of faith, and no one could doubt his sincere desire to see SNU fulfill its mission of ‘educating for responsible Christian living.’ One couldn't ask for a better colleague and friend.”
Billings was born September 23, 1936 in Wilbarger County, TX to Ray and Louise (Frank) Billings. Don married Jerre Lee Hale March 3, 1966 and together they raised two daughters, Kerri and Kelli. He is preceded in death by his wife Jerre; parents, Ray and Louise; and siblings, Ray Billings, Jim Billings, and Kathy Laughliln. He is survived by his daughters, Kerri Crow and husband Craig, and their children Aaron Bradley and Ashley Dawn; Kelli Bowie and husband Rod, and their children Zachary Scott, Courtney Dawn, and Whitney Grace; sister, Dorothy Harris; and brothers, Ed and John Wayne Billings.
Don was born the sixth of seven children and was raised in Texas on a cotton farm. In his twenties, he entered the Air Force and served for four years, then spent time working in the Billings Garage with his father and brothers. After he married, Don decided to complete his college degree and attended Southern Nazarene University (then Bethany Nazarene College) graduating in 1969. It was at SNU where Don accepted an invitation to accept Christ as his personal savior at a chapel service. After a couple of job experiences, he entered health care administration and worked at St. Vincent Charity Hospital in Cleveland for eight years, when he was offered an opportunity to serve at Southern Nazarene University as the Vice President of Business and Financial Affairs. He believed the Lord was calling him to serve at SNU and he made that move in 1981. Don retired in January of this year after the longest tenure at SNU, with more than 25 years of service.
Don truly loved fishing, golfing, watching his grandkids’ sports activities, being with his friends and family, and listening to “books on tape.” He was an avid SNU Crimson Storm fan, attending every possible sports event whether home or away. He committed his life to the Lord and faithfully attended Bethany First Church of the Nazarene. He leaves behind a legacy of love for the Lord, his wife, his daughters and their husbands, his grandchildren and his friends. His strong commitment to the Lord was evident in every aspect of his life and a tremendous example for us all.
Don was a terrific example of a Christian and husband, a wonderful father and father-in-law and “the best Papa in the world!”
Funeral services for Dr. Billings were held Tuesday, November 6 at 2:00 pm at Bethany First Church of the Nazarene in Bethany, Oklahoma, with interment at the Bethany Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the A. Donald Billings and Jerre L. Billings Athletic Endowment at Southern Nazarene University.
This faithful follower of the faith leaves us with sadness for our earthly loss, but confident in his destination.
