Marchant Center dome is mounted

The Marchant Family Alumni & Welcome Center currently under construction on the Southern Nazarene University (SNU) campus was capped with a copper dome at approximately 7:45 am on Wednesday, May 18, 2005.

“We hope the Marchant Family Alumni & Welcome Center (with copper dome) becomes a symbol of the warm welcome students, alumni, and visitors receive on our campus,” said Dr. David Alexander, Vice President for University Advancement.

The Marchant Center dome was constructed by Copper Craft of Keller, TX, and was raised by crane onto the new two-story building by Landmark Construction Group. The mounting of the dome marks one of the final stages of construction as the Marchant Center nears completion for scheduled occupancy this July. A dedication ceremony for the new building will take place in November during SNU Homecoming 2005.

The brick and cast-stone Marchant Center stands as one of the most visible accomplishments to date of SNU’s comprehensive campaign to maximize and strengthen its potential for the future, A Transforming Vision: The Campaign for Southern Nazarene University. The 8,000 square foot center, located on NW 39th Expressway along the east side of the Bresee Administration building, will house the Office of Alumni Relations, the Office of Admissions, and displays from SNU’s Fred Floyd Archives.

To date, almost $1.5 million has been committed for this new “front door” to the SNU campus, including a number of lead gifts, family gifts as well as support from nearly 50 years of SNU alumni classes (’50 to ’98) for various named class projects throughout the building. In addition to the support received from the Marchant Center’s 1,029 donors, specific funding for the dome has been partially underwritten by the classes of ’57 and ’68. A complete list of all Marchant Center donors will be recognized inside the building upon completion.

The Marchant Family Alumni & Welcome Center was designed through an architectural partnership with Anthony McDermid of TAP architecture (building design) and Jerry Lester of Nicek & Lester (construction design).
