The Southern Nazarene University Intercollegiate Management Gaming Team won the national title in the thirty-sixth annual International Collegiate Business Simulation Competition, hosted by the University of San Diego (CA). This marked the seventh title in twelve years, winning in 1992 at the University of Nevada-Reno, in 1994 at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, in 1995, 1996 and 1997 at San Jose State University, and the 2000 and 2003 titles at the University of San Diego. The SNU team joined teams from 27 universities from across the United States, Canada, and the United Arab Emerius in the competition recently completed. Top business students from the likes of San Diego State University, Penn State University, Northern Arizona University, Dubai Woman’s College (UAE), San Jose State University, Southern Illinois University, Arcadia University (PA), California State University-Sacremento, Azusa Pacific University (CA), California Polytechnic State University, Bryant College (RI), and University of California-Fresno matched their collective management talent in head-to-head competition.
Teams began competing on the “net” from their home campuses on February 1, 2003. Each decision, which represents a business quarter, requires the team members to address in detail the full range of corporate growth, productivity, credit norms, market analysis, new product development, plant openings, production line scheduling, compensation policies, advertising, pricing and sales strategies, asset management, finance management, multinational strategy, and strategic planning. In addition to 20 quarterly decisions, each team must complete a comprehensive business plan, an annual report, a series of management reports, and make a presentation to a panel of corporate executives who play the role of judge.
The SNU team defeated California State University, Fresno for the title. The first national title came in 1987 in the Georgia Southern Games at Hilton Head, S.C. The latest was crowned on Saturday evening, April 13 at the Marriott Mission Valley Hotel in San Diego, CA. Members of this year’s team were as follows: President/CEO – Ryan Osweiler, Senior Marketing major, Iowa City, IA; Vice President Finance – Janae Cowan, Senior Accounting major, Waco, TX; Vice President Production – Mike Hartwig, Junior Finance major, Sterling, CO; Vice President Marketing – Craig Buck, Junior Marketing major, Bethany, OK; Vice President Accounting – Kendra Pridey, Junior Accounting major, Leota, KS; and Consultants – Brent LaVigne, Junior Business Administration major, Fredericksburg, MD, and Eric Pertl, Junior Management major, Beaumont, TX.
SNU advisor Dr. Larry Mills stated, “I am very proud of the performance of this team. They are a very solid group – they had a good work ethic, and functioned extremely well as a team. They demonstrated a tenacity to finish the job.”
According to Ryan Osweiler, President, “It was a great experience. The team really came together and did a super job.”
Dr. David Fritzche (Author and Operations Manager of the Games) stated: “SNU’s performance was outstanding. A truly great job.”
