On Sunday, August 8, the members of Bethany First Nazarene Church voted to call Rev. David Busic as their Senior Pastor. Dr. Tharon Daniels, District Superintendent of the Northwest Oklahoma Nazarene District, announced the overwhelmingly positive results. Rev. Busic has accepted the call and plans to be in the Bethany First Nazarene pulpit on Sunday, September 26.
Becoming the pastor of Bethany First Church of the Nazarene will be something of a homecoming for Rev. David Busic. He was born in September 1964 and grew up in Bethany, attending Williams Memorial Church of the Nazarene. David's father (deceased in 1986) was a longtime employee of Southern Nazarene University. His mother has been a critical care nurse at Deaconess Hospital since 1978.
David is a 1982 graduate of Bethany High School and attended Southern Nazarene University, graduating with a degree in religion in 1988. At SNU, he received several honors - Outstanding Religion Student, 1988; Dean's Honor Roll; General Superintendent's Scholarship, Rushing Memorial Graduate Scholarship and the McGrady Memorial Scholarship. He attended Nazarene Theological Seminary, graduating in 1993 with a Master of Divinity degree.
Rev. Busic is currently the Senior Pastor of Central Church of the Nazarene in Kansas City. Before going to Kansas City, David was pastor of the Vineyard Community Church of the Nazarene in Livermore, CA. Rev. Busic also served as associate pastor of Shawnee Church of the Nazarene in Kansas City from 1989 to 1993, and as youth pastor of Williams Memorial Church of the Nazarene in Bethany from 1985 to 1989.
Since 2000, Rev. Busic has been co-editor of Preacher's Magazine. He is also one of the co-authors of the book, Pastor's Guide to Effective Preaching, alongside other leading preachers.
Rev. Busic's wife, Christi, was born and raised in Moore, OK, and is also a graduate of Southern Nazarene University. David and Christi have been married 21 years and have three children - Megan, 18, who will be a freshman at Southern Nazarene University this fall; Ben, 15, who will be a sophomore at Bethany High School; and Madison, 11, who will be in the sixth grade.
Last May, Bethany First Nazarene began the search for a senior pastor - not a frequent occurrence for this 95 year-old church. The last search for a pastor was conducted in 1985 and resulted in a call to Dr. Melvin McCullough. It was the beginning of an 18-year journey for Pastor McCullough. Before the search for Pastor McCullough, it had been 15 years since Bethany First Nazarene called Dr. Ponder Gilliland in 1970.
