SNU Offers Help and Hope to Katrina Refugees

BETHANY, OK – Southern Nazarene University’s Office of Spiritual Development has headed up a plan to help those who have experienced loss due to the destruction of Hurricane Katrina. The University has adopted a church in Orange, Texas that has taken in 200 displaced individuals. The ages of these individuals range from infants to twenty seniors who were evacuated from a nursing home.

Crisis Care Kits are being put together to contribute to the work of Heart to Heart and the Nazarene Disaster Relief (NDR). Overflow of what is collected will be taken to other area churches or to the Louisiana district campgrounds which are where another housing location is that several displaced families are located.

Following are ways that Southern Nazarene University students, faculty, staff and anyone else in the community can help: *Collection boxes are in the dorms and at the Commons building for new and clean used clothing, socks and blankets. *Wednesday, September 7, an offering will be taken during chapel for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Contributions will also be accepted at the Office of Spiritual Development. *Thursday, September 8, a day set aside for fasting. The food service of SNU is partnering with us and will contribute to the relief efforts of every student on the meal plan who fasts a meal that afternoon. Student sign-ups will take place in the days prior to the fast. *SNU’s Student Government is coordinating a special effort to collect items from a few of the local neighborhoods.

We are in need of those who would be willing to purchase and assemble Crisis Care Kits. The kits will provide personal toiletries that will last approximately 10 days. The kits will cost about $8 - $10 each. Once assembled, they can be brought to the Commons building anytime starting Monday, September 5.

Important: Each Crisis Care Kit needs to contain only the items and quantities requested. The kits have to match the inventory posted on the outside of the box in which they are shipped.

Place the following items in a 2-gallon zip-lock bag:
- One medium-sized bottle of shampoo
- Two full-size bars of soap
- One medium-size toothpaste
- Three tooth brushes
- One box of Band-Aids
- One fingernail clipper
- One sturdy hair comb
- Two hand towels (or wash clothes)
- Two pocket-size packages of facial tissues
- One Beanie-Baby-sized stuffed toy

During Spring Break, plans are in the works for University workers that will be making a work trip to New Orleans.

Further plans are currently being made to help those students affected by the Hurricane Katrina.
