SNU's Horse Show Team to compete this Fall
The Horse Show Team from Southern Nazarene University will compete this Fall in the English and Western riding competitions with the IHSA (Intercollegiate Horse Show Association). The team travels and competes with other colleges in Oklahoma and Texas.
The upcoming IHSA show dates will take place at the following locations.
Redlands State College in El Reno, OK – October 28th and 29th.
Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas – November 4th and 5th.
Trinity University in Dallas, Texas – November 18th and 19th.
In the IHSA competitions, a drawing pairs up the horses and riders randomly. Levels range from a beginner walk-trot on up to the advanced open equitation competition. On more advanced levels of the competition, you will see the jumping as well as flat work.
Riders are given points and through the accumulation of the points they advance on. First place is worth seven points. Second place is worth five points. Once the rider has accumulated thirty-five points, the rider will then advance to the next level. It is upon the rider’s qualification at the horse show that will allow them to advance to the regional finals.
In addition to qualifying individually, the college team strives to be the high point college representing the region at the National Horse Show. The coach of each college designates the “point rider” in each division. The best three teams go on to compete at the zone finals and from there, the top two teams from each zone compete at Nationals.
Last year, the SNU Horse Show Team took third place in the IHSA competition. There were fifteen other universities involved in the competition, which are among the Big 12 schools, such as Oklahoma State University (OSU) and Texas A&M University (TAMU).
The IHSA is a recognized member of USA Equestrian (USAE) and the American Quarter Horse Association. To find out more information about IHSA, visit www.ihsainc.com.
