School For Children Wins Marathon
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – Olympic Medalist from Oklahoma, Shannon Miller and Mary Fallon, former Oklahoma Lieutenant Governor helped kick off the kids run for the “7th Annual Memorial Marathon” that took place Sunday, April 29, at 8:30 a.m. where SNU School for Children received recognition.
“Our children began training back in February to prepare for this event. Each child needed to log 25 miles prior to the race. You could see them running laps around the campus mall to train. The last 1.2 miles were run on Sunday” Julie Brant, School for Children teacher said.
Before the race started, Memorial Marathon representatives announced that the School for Children had been declared the winners due to the greatest number of participants.
36% of SNU’s School for Children registered and participated in the race. The schools with the highest percentage of participants were named the winners.
Brant explained that the goal of this race was that children would not only remember the survivors of the bombing and those who died, but that it would also generate interest in exercise and good nutrition amongst the kids.
The SNU School for Children will receive the Mayor’s Fitness Challenge Cup (approximately 4 feet tall) and a $500.00 check for their P.E. department. All kid’s marathon finishers received a custom Kids Marathon finisher’s medal.
The SNU School for Children is dedicated to excellence in education. Its mission is based on the belief that all children can learn and that children must construct their own knowledge through participation in an active learning environment. The integrated learning experience emphasizes communication, thinking, problem-solving and the creative arts. Visit the web site at snu.edu/schoolforchildren
