Sermon Planning Workshop set for Jan. 12th

The Office of Church Relations at Southern Nazarene University will host a sermon planning workshop for area pastors on Monday, January 12, 2004, from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Royce Brown Business Building, located off of NW 39th Expressway and Peniel on the SNU campus. The workshop is open to pastors of all denominations and will feature presenters Dr. Stan Toler, Rev. Derl Keefer, and keynote speaker Dr. Michael Duduit.

“I know of no more daunting task or rewarding endeavor than the preaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is a humbling and exhilarating enterprise,” said Dr. Terry Toler, Vice President for Church Relations. “We are all looking for resources – gifted resource people and opportunities to improve our far from perfect efforts in proclaiming the marvelous Word of God.” The Sermon Planning Workshop is designed to provide pastors with practical learning tools that will enrich and inspire both their lives and ministry.

Dr. Stan Toler will open the preaching workshop with a session entitled “Sermons Under Construction.” Published author and one of the most sought-after speakers in the Church of the Nazarene, Toler serves as senior pastor of Trinity Church of the Nazarene in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and hosts the television program Leadership Today. In addition to having pastored some of the fastest-growing churches in the denomination, Toler has traveled around the world helping churches and missions organizations develop plans for growth. Toler has authored multiple books and manuals on the subjects of ministry, evangelism and “helps” for pastors.

Keynote speaker Dr. Michael Duduit is president of American Ministry Resources and the founding publisher and editor of Preaching magazine. Duduit is author and editor of several books, including the Handbook of Contemporary Preaching and Communicate with Power. Duduit is also the founder and director of the National Conference on Preaching and the International Congress on Preaching. In addition to Preaching magazine, Duduit also produces PreachingNow, an email newsletter which goes to nearly 10,000 pastors and church leaders each week; Christian College Link, a publication for Christian high school students; and Leader Links, a new web-based publication on Christian leadership issues. Duduit will lead two sessions on “Expository Preaching in a Post-Modern Era.”

Adult Development Ministries Coordinator with the Adult Department of Sunday School Ministries for the International Church of the Nazarene, Rev. Derl Keefer will conclude the workshop with his presentation entitled “Illustrating the Sermon.” Keefer has written numerous books and served as editor for the Wesleyan Preaching Resources, volumes 1 and 2. Keefer regularly contributes articles, devotionals and sermons in a variety of ministry-related periodicals.

Cost for the workshop is $29 per person, which includes all presentations and handouts. To register, log on to ww.snu.edu/church_relations, e-mail: churchrelations@snu.edu, or call 405.491.6314 or 800.648.9899 ext. 6314. Reservations are requested by January 8, 2004.
