Thomas Herskowitz New Chair for SNU School of Business
Dr. Thomas Herskowitz begins this Fall 2005 semester as the new Chairman for the Southern Nazarene University School of Business.
“Tom Herskowitz brings an excellent background from his diverse business experience to the responsibilities of leading the SNU School of Business. His global experience and perspective, his educational background, and his commitment to the values and mission of Southern Nazarene University contribute to his qualifications for this important assignment. Tom has much to offer SNU students and he will be a great resource for the Oklahoma business community,” said Don Dunnington, Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Herskowitz came to SNU straight from Uganda, where he and his family served for two years as volunteer missionaries with New Hope Uganda (NHU), a non-denominational, evangelical Christian orphan center taking care of 450 children in the Luweero District of Uganda, 60 miles north of the capital city of Kampala. He says he finds his place at SNU today partially due to the inspiration of a professor from his graduate school days in Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California.
“I have never forgotten the dedication and commitment of Dr. Ensign who had received his PhD from a large university and could have taught anywhere, but chose to teach at a small Christian liberal arts college. For several years now I have wanted to do the same, but because I had not lived my life in academia I didn’t know if it was possible,” stated Herskowitz.
The credentials and experience Herskowitz brings to this position brings a wealth of educational resources to students in the SNU School of Business program. Prior to his two years of volunteer service with NHU, Herskowitz amassed an impressive business career record including Chief Strategy Officer and Executive Vice President for Mail Boxes Etc./UPS, Chief Financial Officer for Glamour Shots Licensing, Executive Vice President & CFO for The Brice Group, President & Owner of H & H Operations L.P., Executive Vice President of Robert E. Wooley, Inc. He also is an experienced Naval Flight Officer who flew 200 combat missions on F-4 Phantom jets, has worked as a Banking manager and vice president, as well as a legal Associate for Latham & Watkins Law Firm.
Herskowitz received a BA from Westmont College in Santa Barbara, CA in 1967 with a major in Biology, an MBA in 1975 from UCLA in Los Angeles, CA with an emphasis in finance, and a JD degree from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles with an emphasis in business law, graduating Cum Laude. He is also a member of the St. Thomas Moore Law Honor Society and a member of the Loyola Law Review. He has Co-authored a law review article on Usury and Proposition2 and California Law.
Herskowitz replaces professor Cindy Powell who has served as Interim Chair since Dr. Larry Mills, retired as Chair for the SNU School of Business in 2003.
