Women's Basketball Advances to Second Round of Nationals, Defeats Claflin 72-46
(JACKSON,TN)---The Crimson Storm women's basketball team fought off a pesky Claflin College squad on Thursday afternoon and advanced to the second round of the NAIA National Tournament in Jackson, Tennessee with a 72-46 victory over the Pantherettes.
SNU entered the tournament as one of four #1-seeds but struggled early with the 8th-seeded Pantheretts of Claflin. SNU held only a four point halftime advantage, 26-22. Claflin would battle SNU in the second half and cut it as close as three at 39-36, before the Crimson Storm would run away with the final ten minutes of the game, outscoring Claflin 33-10 to advance to the 72-46 win.
SNU struggled from the floor on the night, hitting only 43% of their shots and only 3 of 10 from three. SNU did connect on 17 of 21 from the free throw line. The Crimson Storm held Claflin to 27% shooting from the floor on the night and 4 of 25 shooting from three. SNU out rebounded Claflin 34-26 and forced 19 Pantherette turnovers, while turning it over 16 times themselves.
Individually, SNU was led by 15 points and five rebounds from Ndeye Ndiaye. Ndiaye led four players in double figures on the night, followed by 12 points from Khady Ngom, 11 from Bandegne Diop and 10 from Katie Snodgrass.
Claflin was led by 13 points from LaKisha Griffin. Griffin was the only player for Claflin in double figures.
With the victory, SNU advances to the second round of the NAIA National Tournament and will play on Friday, March 19 at 4:30 p.m. against the winner of tonight's Lindsey Wilson/Point Loma Nazarene match up at 9:45 this evening.
