Women’s Basketball Moves on to Quarterfinals, Defeats Point Loma 73-56

(JACKSON,TN)---Top seeded Southern Nazarene advanced to the quarterfinals of the NAIA Women’s Basketball National Tournament on Friday night with a 73-56 victory over Point Loma Nazarene at the Oman Arena in Jackson, Tennessee. The game was a re-match of last year’s National Quarterfinal game in which SNU also defeated the Sea Lions, 74-61.

Southern Nazarene jumped off to a great start, taking a 12-2 lead three and half minutes into the first half. The first half would be a half of runs as SNU would jump out to a 24-11 lead thanks to a 7-0 run with 9:51 to play in the first half.

Point Loma would answer with a run of their own, outscoring SNU 7-0 in the next two minutes to cut the Crimson Storm’s lead to 24-18. SNU would then charge back with another run, this time scoring ten straight points in the next three minutes to lead 34-18 with 4:24 to play before halftime. SNU would go on to lead 38-27 at halftime as the Sea Lions would outscore the Crimson Storm 9-4 in the final 4:24 of the first half.

The second half would see Southern Nazarene shoot a blistering 53% from the floor as the Crimson Storm would cruise to the 73-56 victory. Point Loma would never be with single digits of SNU in the second half, the closest the Sea Lions were able to get to Southern Nazarene was ten points with 15:44 to play. SNU would lead by as many 19 in the second half of play.

As a team, the top seeded Crimson Storm shot 53% from the floor for the game, while holding Point Loma to 34% shooting from the field. SNU also connected on 5 of 13 from three while Point Loma knocked down 7 of 20. The Crimson Storm hit 2 of 4 from the free throw line to Point Loma’s 5 of 11.

Individually, the Crimson Storm was led by senior guard Katie Korfe, who knocked down 19 points on a hot 9 of 11 shooting from the floor. Korfe added six rebounds, two steals and two assists. Khady Ngom followed with 14 points and Katie Snodgrass added 10. Southern Nazarene had tremendous bench production on the night as well as Molly Bolton finished with eight points, Jana Maker added seven and Bandegne Diop followed with six.

Point Loma was led by Alli Greenaway with 20 points and Jessica Mercado finished with 16 for the Sea Lions.

With the victory SNU moves to 33-3 on the season and advances to the NAIA National Quarterfinals on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. Southern Nazarene will meet the winner of tonight’s 8:00 p.m. game between 2nd-seeded Union, Tennessee and 3rd-seeded Auburn-Montgomery, Alabama.
