Women's Tennis Duo Win ITA Women's Doubles National Championship

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Southern Nazarene's Nikkita Fountain and Larikah Russell captured the women's doubles title Sunday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association “Super Bowl” of Small College Tennis at the HEB Tennis Center.

Fountain and Russell beat Broward (Fla.) Community College's Karine Ionesco and Leigh Shelton 6-3, 6-2 in today's women’s title match. Fountain and Russell earned a spot in the "Super Bowl" draw by virtue of winning the NAIA doubles title on Friday night. They beat the NCAA Division II champs last night.

Russell, the 2003 ITA National Rookie of the Year, also won the NAIA singles title this weekend, but lost in last night's semis.

By virtue of winning the ITA "Super Bowl" of Small College Tennis they earn wild cards into the Nov. 6-9 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, hosted by the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. This tournament is the second of three national championships for Division I tennis and offers these small college participants the unique opportunity to become champions for all divisions of collegiate tennis.

One of collegiate athletics' most unique events, the ITA National Small College Championships first determined national champions for NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community Colleges men's and women's singles and doubles during the first two-and-a-half days of play. Those champions then competed against each other to become the overall national small college champs in the ITA "Super Bowl" of Small College Tennis.

Weekend "Super Bowl" coverage was broadcast live on the internet on www.RadioTennis.com. This event is presented by the U.S. Tennis Association and administered by the ITA. Complete results for the tournament can be found at www.itatennis.com.
