Catalysts

Catalysts

In 1977 SNU alumni formed the group Catalysts in order to provide major financial assistance to the Science and Mathematics Division. About sixteen alumni attended an organizational luncheon during Homecoming in November 1977. At this meeting an Executive Board was chosen consisting of Catalysts members who resided close enough to SNU to meet periodically. About 175 alumni have joined Catalysts since 1977, of which approximately 60 contribute to Catalysts annually.

Catalysts help the Science and Mathematics Division at SNU to provide exceptional scientific opportunities in an environment that fosters deep Christian commitment. Catalysts seek to promote this unique combination at SNU through financial support of:

  • Faculty-student research projects to enhance the level of scientific instruction and contribute to new knowledge,
  • Science Heritage Scholarships to support worthy students, in recognition of the pioneers of the SNU science and mathematics program,
  • Scientific instruments, especially where purchases can be matched by other funds.

Catalysts also seek to contribute to SNU via lecturing, consulting, recruiting students and contributing equipment. As a result, Catalysts hope to promote an increased awareness of the accomplishments of SNU alumni and provide fellowship among its members through the annual Homecoming luncheon.

Over the past 15 years Catalysts members have donated more than $400,000 to further science at SNU. A significant portion ($82,000) has been used to establish the Science Equipment Endowment Fund.

Each year Catalysts expends approximately $35,000, with scholarships accounting for 75% of the annual expenses and faculty research projects the remainder. Catalysts funds are expended only at the recommendation of the Executive Board. Faculty members of the Science and Mathematics Division submit proposals to the Board. The Faculty Coordinator serves as a liaison and assists in the preparation of the yearly budget proposal.

The Catalysts annual membership contribution is $500. The Catalysts Executive Board realizes that not all alumni are in a position to support Catalysts at the $500 level. Therefore, alumni are encouraged to support Catalysts at the level they can afford. All gifts will be appreciated.
