So you’re interested in studying off-campus. What now?
Don’t panic. Below are some resources to help you figure out what you need to do.
Timeline
Now
- Mention to your advisor that you’re thinking about studying abroad. Check to see if there are any requirements specific to your major.
- Start thinking about when you want to go. Your junior or senior year is usually best.
- Start looking at the different programs to see what you’re interested in.
- Contact the CGE to let us know that you’re interested.
Semester before you go
- Talk to Financial Aid. Find out how a semester off campus will affect your scholarships/loans.
- Tell your advisor your plans.
- Apply to your desired program. Fall semester deadlines are usually between February and April, and Spring semester deadlines are usually between May and October.
- Apply for a passport if you do not have one (if necessary for your program).
- Save money. You will want to spend extra money on travel and extras while you are off-campus!
- Contact the CGE. We want to find out what your plans are, and give you some tips to make the process easier.
One month before you go
- Contact Housing to arrange housing for the semester you return to SNU.
- Arrange at the Commons Office for your mail to be forwarded to someone who can be responsible for anything that needs to be taken care of while you are off-campus.
- Check with Financial Aid and the Business Office to make sure that you have signed all pertinent documents.
- Talk to your bank. Find out rules regarding international card charges, ATM transactions, and anything that might affect your finances.
- Find out if you need any special clothing, books, or other items for your program.
- Check with your advisor about procedures to enroll while you are gone.
Two weeks before you go
- Set up a Skype account. International video chatting is free; you can also use Skype to call phones in the United States from a computer in another country more cheaply than using international calling cards.
- Make sure your family and friends know that communication will probably take a little bit longer than normal.
- Consider starting a blog or an email list. You have a lot of people who care about you, and want to hear about your adventures. (Make sure to add cge@mail.snu.edu to the list!)
One week before you go
- Start packing. Make sure you have everything you need (especially your passport).
- Give yourself time to spend some time with family and friends. It might be sad to leave them, but your adventure will be worth it!
