SNU Chapel: A Place to Belong and Become

Tuesdays at 10:50am & Wednesdays at 10:00am.

BY BRAD STRAWN
Vice President for Spiritual Development

Although the Department of Spiritual Development is much more than simply chapel, chapel is the centerpiece. Chapel is a place to belong and become for the whole SNU community. Two days a week we gather to share and to worship through music, the word, and the table. It is our prayer that no matter at what level of spiritual development community members find themselves, chapel will minister to them, challenge them, and transform them.

Chapel is more than a worship service. It is also a classroom. SNU is a community, and when we come together we are a worshiping community-- but we are not the church. Community members are challenged to understand the importance of the local church, spiritual disciplines, and the central place of relationships in spiritual transformation. Members are also encouraged to develop a "theology of everyday life." The overall goal is a community that is being continually transformed into Christ's likeness (2 Corinthians 3:18). This is done through a variety of formats and mediums that are sensitive to both college students and the larger SNU community.

Chapel Attendance

Chapel attendance is required during each semester of enrollment at SNU.
Students are required to obtain 27 attendance credits per semester. Each chapel service attended is one credit. Five (5) of the 27 credits can be earned through participation in small group ministries, service projects, and mission trips. These activities are intended to enhance community and contribute to the student's spiritual formation. Each student is responsible for submitting chapel enrichment petitions on-line through the Southern Nazarene University intranet.
