Bethany, Ok - May 2nd, 2018. Southern Nazarene University will hold its Spring Commencement on Saturday, May 12, 2018, expecting to confer over 400 degrees in two ceremonies held in the Sawyer Center on the main campus in Bethany, Oklahoma. Dr. Keith Newman, president of SNU, has invited Dr. Carla Sunberg, General Superintendent for the Church of the Nazarene, to give the Commencement address.
Dr. Sunberg was elected to the office of General Superintendent in June 2017. At the time of her election, Sunberg was president of Nazarene Theological Seminary (NTS) in Kansas City, MO, where she had been serving since January 2014. She and her husband, Chuck, served 13 years as pioneer missionaries to the former Soviet Union, followed by service as co-district superintendents of the East Ohio District Church of the Nazarene.
She earned a BSN from MidAmerica Nazarene University, the Master of Arts in Theological Studies from NTS, and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from Nazarene Theological College and the University of Manchester, United Kingdom. She is a dynamic and sought-after speaker, has authored several books and numerous articles for various publications, and has served in a wide variety of leadership positions around the globe.
Prior to Commencement day, traditional program graduates will gather for a Baccalaureate service to be held on Friday, May 11, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. in Herrick Auditorium, which is located on the campus of Southern Nazarene University. Serving as Baccalaureate speaker will be Dr. Fay Sheldon Quanstrom, magna cum laude graduate of SNU (’63). Rev. Dr. Quanstrom holds advanced degrees from Northern Seminary (Warrenville, IL) and was ordained to the Christian Ministry in 2002. In addition to serving in staff and pastoral roles at churches in England, Illinois and Arizona, she taught for 11 years, including positions at Northwest Nazarene University and Olivet Nazarene University.
On Commencement Day, May 12, 2018, undergraduate (traditional) degrees will be conferred in a 10:00 a.m. ceremony, and the Professional and Graduate Studies ceremony will take place at 2:00 p.m. Doors open one hour prior to starting times. For those unable to attend, both ceremonies will be available to view via live streaming at snulive.com.
In addition to the presentation of the coveted President’s Award in the morning ceremony, and the Distinguished Achievement Award in the afternoon, the morning program will feature returning graduates of the Class of 1968, honored as Golden Grads, with special recognition and the presentation of a commemorative medallion.
