Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science

At Southern Nazarene University, we don't just believe in your dreams -- we equip you with the best education which gives you the confidence to make your dreams a reality.

We know you are selecting a college for more than just its location or school colors. You want to go somewhere that will prepare you for your future.

At Southern Nazarene University, we want that for you too. That is why we work hard to make sure our degrees are supported by a rigorous and comprehensive curriculum.

We hire highly-qualified faculty who not only know the ins-and-outs of the profession you seek, but who truly wish to see you succeed individually. We make sure you leave SNU prepared for a great career in Environmental Science. That's why we encourage you to not just dream, but to dream with confidence.

Unique Programs

As a student of SNU’s environmental science program you will have the opportunity to learn from experts in various disciplines about ecology and sustainability in the field. In addition to your core science courses, you will take applied courses like environmental sustainability and environmental health and explore your role in the environment and how the environment affects all of us. Your knowledge and understanding of the concepts will grow throughout your time at SNU.

Unique Learning Opportunities

Consider spending a semester abroad in Costa Rica where you can take several courses ranging from tropical ecology to global stewardship. You will be able to work at the Quetzal Education Research Center in the heart of Costa Rica. QERC is in a tropical montane cloud forest, high in the Talamanca Mountains. Students who attend the QERC spring program will enjoy time spent hiking on over 20 miles of trails and exploring nearly 1,000 acres within a UNESCO World Heritage Biosphere Reserve. While at QERC, students will study ecology and gain hands-on experience in the field. Also, students attending QERC will work alongside experts in field biology while conducting their own independent research, a rare and valuable opportunity.

In addition to QERC, SNU students can participate in the Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies (www.ausable.org). Au Sable offers  23 different summer field courses in the Great Lakes and Pacific Northwest regions that range from field botany to marine biology. While studying at Au Sable, students will work alongside experts in a wide variety of scientific fields and expand their network beyond the SNU campus.

Highly-qualified Professors

Your professors here are more than just qualified to teach. They are experts in the field of environmental science. Learn from a professor with years of experience working on various projects related to groundwater monitoring and drinking water quality for the Environmental Protection Agency. Learn from a professor with over ten years of research experience doing National Science Foundation-funded field studies.  Our professors don’t just know environmental sciences, they have first-hand work experience within the field.

Preparation For After Graduation

Our number one goal at SNU is to set you up for success after graduation. With an environmental science major you have a variety of options for your future career path. Some of our graduates go on to graduate school where they continue in various fields of study including ecology, sustainability, environmental science and public health. You may also choose to go right into a related career field like environmental testing, environmental monitoring or as a private or government facility lab technician.

Alumni Spotlight

Collin Whitsett

Environmental Studies alumni at Southern Nazarene University, Bethany, Oklahoma

Meet Collin Whitsett, an SNU Environmental Science graduate who got a job after graduation at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute assisting a PhD Student from Arizona State University on his research. Collin worked on warning coloration in Heliconius butterflies, specifically their how they are used by different species of Heliconius depending on the microhabitat within the forest those butterflies most often frequent. Heliconius are well studied genetically, but “this research focuses more on the behavior of the butterflies and complements the work of geneticists,” says Whitesett, who now works as a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Specialist at GAI Consultants.

“SNU has been great in two regards,” says Whitsett. “One, SNU has QERC, its very own field station in a truly exceptional part of Costa Rica, and two, SNU is affiliated with the Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies, a Christian institution that offers excellent summer courses in ecology and environmental stewardship. The semester I spent in Costa Rica and the classes I took at Au Sable have been the bread and butter of my academic (and experiential!) understanding of the natural world.”
