National Hispanic Gathering Held at SNU
Quadrennial Congress Exceeds Expectations

Hispanic Congress Service

SNU served as host for the quadrennial Hispanic/Latino National Congress in June of 2016. With over 270 participating, the campus was filled with activity and enthusiasm. Dr. Roberto Hodgson, Multicultural Ministries director for USA/Canada, Church of the Nazarene, described the congress as "a wonderful Nazarene family reunion from across the nation's Hispanic districts and ministries."

Sponsored by the Hispanic Strategy Committee and Casa Nazarena de Publicaciones, the conference theme was “Honoring the past, celebrating the present, anticipating the future: Vision 2020.”

Dr. Gustavo Crocker, General Superintendent for the Church of the Nazarene, served as keynote speaker, along with Dr. Hodgson and Nazarene elder (retired) Jose Rodriguez. Plenary sessions, workshops and services were designed to inspire and equip the participants for the mission of the church, to “make Christlike disciples in the nations.”

The next National Congress is scheduled for June of 2020. For more information about Multicultural Ministries in the Church of the Nazarene, visit Multicultural Ministries USA/Canada.

SNU Hosts Q2016

Quiz 2016The legacy of Bible quizzing in the Church of the Nazarene dates back to 1964 and has continually grown and strengthened. This was never more evident than in June of 2016 when Q2016 came to the campus of SNU. Over 150 teams, coaches and sponsors converged from across the USA and Canada for Bible quizzing competitions, worship, and recreation.

Held every other year, this USA/Canada Region quiz is traditionally hosted by one of the Nazarene institutions of higher education, and Southern Nazarene University was pleased to serve as the host site for this year’s spirited competitions.

The SNU Conference Services office, directed by Mrs. Cheri Pack, coordinated housing for 700 quizzers and coaches, and worked closely with the staffs of multiple departments to provide technical support, setup of hundreds of tables and chairs, janitorial services, environmental services, and security, to name just a few of the many aspects of hosting such an event.

With over 1,000 in attendance for services, the campus of SNU was host to hundreds of first-time visitors from every educational Region in the USA and Canada. Your campus was ready for “company” with manicured lawns and flowerbeds, shiny floors and smiling faces. Guests were quick to remark that they felt a warm welcome at SNU.

Students in Missionary Service

SNU - a Great Commission University

Across the summer months, 21 teams of SIMS (SNU In Missions) volunteers traveled to 19 countries around the world, living out Christ's command to spread the gospel among the nations. Joel Mullen, SNU's director of the SIMS initiative, reported that the teams, made up of SNU students, faculty, staff and alumni served in an enormous variety of ways and places.

Each of the 149 participants in 2016 was carefully and prayerfully selected and placed on a mission team before launching into a year of fund-raising and team building. The full compliment of volunteers gathered for spring training on the campus of SNU, and departures to their respective places of service were staggered throughout the summer months.

Teams engaged in construction and cleanup, conducted sports camps and Bible school programs, and joined in worship services in homes, huts, humble buildings in small villages and urban settings in crowded cities.

The 114 SNU students who participated in 2016 will be forever changed, and the 33 faculty, staff and alumni mentors (along with 2 children of mentors) were deeply impacted by the experience. They returned with a new vision of Kingdom work around the globe, and those they served were touched by the compassion and love of the SIMS teams.

The application process for 2017 is underway and Mullen anticipates an even bigger response and outreach next summer.
