Hulsey to be Inducted to NAIA Hall of Fame

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced its Hall of Fame Class for 2011-12 and Southern Nazarene University’s Steve Hulsey has been notified that he will join 17 others to inducted into this year’s class.

A two-time NAIA Coach of the Year honoree, Hulsey has managed to take both Southern Nazarene University (SNU) men’s and women’s golf programs to elite status among NAIA programs and has solidified himself as one of the top coaches in the country. Hulsey has served in leadership positions for the NAIA and the sport of golf on a local and national level for much of his career and led the Crimson Storm women’s golf program to the 1999 and 2002 NAIA National Championships and 15 straight national tournament appearances from 1996-2010. On the men’s side, Hulsey’s team made 12 NAIA National Tournament appearances. In addition to success on the course Hulsey has coached numerous NAIA All-Americans and Scholar-Athletes.

“I am really honored to even be selected and then to look at this year’s class makes it even more of an honor,” said Hulsey. “It’s a great tribute to close to 300 kids I’ve worked with over the years. They have made my job easier and we’ve had a lot of great kids who have worked hard. I wouldn’t be here without those student-athletes who’ve put forth the effort to get better every day.”

Hulsey, who will be inducted as a women’s golf coach, will be formally inducted, May 14, 2012, at the NAIA Women’s Golf Championship in Greenville, Tenn. He was one of two golf coaches named to the list including long-time great Robert Cornett of Texas Wesleyan. Hulsey was not the only inductee with Oklahoma ties either. Southwestern Oklahoma State’s John Loftin (women’s basketball) and Oklahoma City University’s Freddy Sanchez (baseball) were also named in the class.

“I couldn’t be happier to go into this class alongside a mentor and great friend in Bob Cornett,” said Hulsey. “He has been a fantastic colleague in this profession. It’s also an honor to go in with two other well-known names in this state. I look forward to sharing this honor with my family and all the student-athletes who have played for me over the years.
