Learning about Issues that Impact your Safety

Education is the primary vehicle for addressing issues of safety on and around campus. Beginning with New Student Institute each year, tips on safety and security are given through public presentations in seminars, residence hall programs and printed material, such as brochures similar to this document. Most often, programs on campus safety and security occur during the first month of an academic year. Informational brochures on safety topics can be found in the following locations: Student Development Office, the Student Health Center, and Counseling Center. Also, please familiarize yourself with the safety tips offered in this document.

Southern Nazarene University’s alcohol policy for students enrolled in traditional programs is a lifestyle policy in that it addresses the use and possession of both alcohol and drugs on and off campus. The policy calls for abstinence, stating that the use and /or possession of alcoholic beverages and illegal drugs on or off campus is prohibited.

For students enrolled in the Adult and Graduate Studies programs, the possession and use of alcohol is prohibited while on campus.

Students under the age of 21 should understand that legal sanctions also apply for unlawful possession or distribution of alcohol, and that for illicit drugs, legal sanctions apply for any age. A student involved in violation of these policies will enter the disciplinary process of the university, in addition to accountability to the legal system that may be required.

The possession and/or use of tobacco is prohibited on or off campus for students enrolled in traditional programs. For students enrolled in Adult and Graduate Studies programs, smoking is not permitted on campus or in campus/classroom facilities.

Weapons are not allowed on the campus. Hand guns, shot guns, air guns, pellet guns, paint guns, rifles, hunting knives, martial arts weapons and fireworks are examples of prohibited weapons. Possession of these weapons may result in arrest and will result in a fine and confiscation of the weapon(s).

The Registration of all vehicles used by students, faculty and staff plays an important role in the safety of our campus. All students, faculty, and staff are required to register their vehicles at the SNU Security Office (located in the entry way on the main floor of Beaver Science Hall) and display a valid SNU parking permit on their windshield.
