School of Music

Special Requirements*
The SNU School of Music is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), and offers standards in accordance with the requirements of this organization.

Applied music examinations (juries) are given by committees of the music faculty at the end of each semester. The examinations at the end of the sophomore year will determine whether or not a Music major will be permitted entrance into the performance concentration.

Students in all Music major programs are required to pass a piano proficiency examination by the conclusion of their junior year. Two of the elements must be completed by the conclusion of their freshman year; failure to do so results in a one-semester probation period.  If two elements are not passed by the third semester, enrollment in further music courses will not be permitted.  Music education students must pass the piano proficiency exam before student teaching.

Students enrolled for at least 12 hours toward Music degrees will be required to attend a specific number of recital programs (Recital Attendance), and also Enrichment Seminar.  Enrichment Seminar provides opportunities for students to perform in semi-formal Performance Labs, hear from special guest speakers, and also work with students in their same degree program.  Both Recital Attendance and Enrichment Seminar are required for Music majors, but are zero-level courses, meaning they do not add to the student's credit load.

All Music majors are to present a Junior Level Recital on their applied major instrument. In special instances students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Music, a Bachelor of Science in Music with a Ministry or Business emphasis, or a Bachelor of Music Education degree may prepare a Senior Project (M TH 4481) in lieu of a Junior Level Recital. The nature and scope of the student's project is to be worked out with the student's advisor with the approval of the Chair of the School of Music.

Music majors are required to enroll in an ensemble each semester, determined by their declared primary instrument. Wind and percussion players enroll in Symphonic Band, string players in Chamber Strings/Orchestra. Instrumental majors are also required to take two semesters of Choral Society at some point during their four years.

Vocal majors enroll in Concert Choir, SNU Chorale or University Singers. Vocal and keyboard majors are also required to enroll in Choral Society.

Students who are pursuing the Bachelor of Music Education degree are required to join the Music Educators National Conference (MENC).

*Additional guidelines are found in the School of Music Handbook.
