Southern Nazarene University President Emeritus Ponder Gilliland was hospitalized following a stroke on July 2. Regarded by many as a respected leader in the Church of the Nazarene, Gilliland was reported to have lost his sight and ability to swallow.
While he remained under the watchful care of medical professionals, as of Tuesday, July 7, doctors estimated he may only have a week or two to live.
Gillaland passed away Saturday morning, July 11.
Gilliland served as a pastor in California, Arkansas, Oklahoma (Bethany First), and Texas (Dallas First). He also served as superintendent of the San Antonio, Texas, District. From 1985-1989, Gilliland was president of Southern Nazarene University.
He and his wife, Ellen, resided in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, July 14, at Bethany First Church at 11 A.M.
