SNU Alumnus Becomes Student at New Medical School Campus

Southern Nazarene University alumnus Daniel Linville (’10) is a part of a new medical school campus in Salina, Kansas that will focus on rural communities.

Linville is one of eight in an inaugural class that will receive all of their training in a small community and where officials hope they will remain to practice medicine. The new school is operated by the University of Kansas and is the smallest in the nation to offer a full four-year medical education.

Because of the small class, Linville and his classmates will get more opportunities to gain hands-on experience. It is also a program that will be more tailored to those wanting to practice primary care, especially in a rural setting.

After graduating from SNU in 2010, Linville began working in at family practice in Wichita, Kansas. After 13 months he knew that he wanted to go in to family medicine. He also hopes to use his general practice to go in to medical mission work one day.

Linville is looking forward to taking advantage of the small opportunities that come over the next couple of years prior to starting his "official" clinical experience as a third and fourth year student. He will have opportunities to observe a procedure like a cardiac catheterization or delivery and not be competing with other students and residents.

Linville is excited about this new program and said, “The community ofSalina has been tremendously supportive of this program. I am excited to be training as a doctor in this community and I am so grateful for the professors at SNU who believed in me and helped me mature as a person and scholar.”

Orientation began on July 22 and the first day of class was Monday, August 1st.
