SNU Alumnus Elected Mayor

Southern Nazarene University alumnus and Real Estate Attorney, Matthew Marchant (’98), was named Mayor of Carrollton, Texas on May 14.

Marchant, who served as a city council member for nine years, defeated the incumbent, receiving 65% of the vote. Marchant’s plan for the future of Carrollton includes addressing and preventing recurring crime, boosting retail, commercial, and transit-oriented development, creating operational efficiencies in local government, and introducing opportunities for its citizens to intermingle with each other, public schools, and other community partners. "I am excited about the opportunity to serve as Mayor of Carrollton,"he said.

Marchant received a Bachelor of Science Degree from SNU and Juris Doctorate from University of Texas School of Law. "The education and character building that I experienced at Southern Nazarene University laid the foundation for my career in law and public service,"said Marchant. "I was proud to have my college roommate, Drew Shirley, as a part of my campaign and appreciate the support and expertise of several of my "crew" from SNU during my campaign."

A suburb of Dallas, Carrollton has a population of nearly 130,000 and is among the 200 largest cities in America. The city was recently named one of the 15 Best Places to Live by Money Magazine.
