SNU's Marty Michelson, PhD., guest speaker for OKDHS Office of Faith-based Community Initiatives

BETHANY, OK --- Dr. Marty Michelson, PhD. professor at Southern Nazarene University will be the guest speaker in the upcoming Lecture series “Why the Faith Community Should be Involved in Human Services:  Stories of Compassion” as part of The Practice and Policy Lecture Series sponsored by the OKDHS Office Planning, Research and Statistics and the University of Oklahoma Center for Public Management.    The lecture will take place on Thursday, November 19 at 12:00 p.m. located in the Oklahoma History Center, 2401 N. Laird Avenue in Oklahoma City across from the State Capital.

“It is a privilege to be asked to speak at this public event. I have already had opportunity to meet with Robin Jones (the director of the Oklahoma Office of Faith Based and Community Initiatives). She is energetic and animated. In my conversations with Robin, she has asked that I share animating stories that recontextualize the work that state agencies and persons within state agencies perform. Agencies provide needed services in the way of items, goods, and cash based programs that offer aid. But, those who work in these agencies might get caught up more in a "job" of the agency than in a "mission" to those they serve. I have been asked to help persons in these offices reconsider the scope of what they do by helping them find a renewed sense of passion and commitment to their mission - which is bigger than their job. I plan to do this by connecting stories of real persons in Oklahoma City in order to inspire mission and focus for state based employees. It's a daunting task and I pray for God's direction and guidance,” said Dr. Marty Michelson”.

Dr Marty Michelson is a professor at Southern Nazarene University. He has been the children’s minister at various churches including Calvary Church of the Nazarene, in Colorado Springs, CO and First Church of the Nazarene in OKC. In his sixth year as Assistant Professor of Old Testament, Dr. Michelson is a member of the NW Oklahoma District Ministerial Studies Board. He has been involved in a project to engage students at SNU in serving the community domestically and internationally. Dr. Michelson’s style of thinking and teaching, which led him to encourage students to get involved, has attracted attention in the academic community.

There is ample data of the vast needs in our community, such as children who are abused and neglected, addictions of all kinds and the basics of just needing food for the next meal.  Much of this data with stories of those whose path to dignity, though not easy, have moved them from a black hole of challenges to a meaningful life of planting seeds of dignity for others. -- http://lectureseries.oucpm.org
