BETHANY, Okla. — At 6-11, Southern Nazarene’s Noah Starkey literally has a different perspective than nearly everyone else around him.
After playing a central role for the best season at SNU in Division II history, Starkey was able to use his talent on the court to see the world in a different perspective. One of 10 college basketball players, the only Division II player on the team, Starkey was invited to participate with Athletes In Action for 14 days in the Czech Republic and Spain.
“It was a great experience,” said Starkey. “ I had never been out of the country before. It was cool to see a different part of the world.”
Starkey heard about the opportunity from former Kansas University and Miami Heat product Wayne Simien.
“Wayne used to come back and work basketball camps in Kansas,” said Starkey. “He would stay at our house our family got to know him well. He’s close with the tour director and that’s how we made the connection with Athletes in Action.”
The team conducted a training camp at Baylor May 21-24 and departed the USA to Prague, Czech Republic. The team played two games vs. U20 Czech National Team May 27 and 28. The team then flew to Madrid, Spain where they played games against pro teams May 30, June 1 and June 2.
The goals of the tour were to provide a rich cross-cultural experience for each team member, an opportunity to compete internationally, and for team members to grow in their personal faith.
“We did this more in the Czech Republic than Spain, but we got to eat with the teams and share our faith with them,” said Starkey. “One guy was also able to share his testimony with us as well.”
Baylor Assistant Coach Bill Peterson, who spent 7 years serving in the NBA as a coach for the Milwaukee Bucks and Dallas Mavericks, coached the team.
