Southern Nazarene University Spring Commencement News

Spring Commencement at Southern Nazarene University (SNU) marked the accomplishment of 366 awarded certificates.

At the May 15th Commencement, SNU introduced three individuals who were awarded honorary degrees. David A. Busic received a Doctor of Divinity degree. John Michael Crabtree received a Doctor of Humane Letters degree and Walliere Pierre, a Doctor of Divinity degree.

David Busic serves on the General Board for the Church of the Nazarene and is President of the USA National board. He is a member of the Board of General Superintendent’s Thought Partners, the Northwest Oklahoma District Advisory Board, and the Southern Nazarene University Board of Trustees.

J. Michael Crabtree received his B. Music Ed and M.A. in Language Arts from Southern Nazarene University in 1972, and 1976. He served as SNU’s first full-time Sports Information Director from 1971 until 1980. In 1980 he assumed the role of Alumni Director. In 1989, he was named VP of University Advancement, which evolved, into his current role as Assistant to the President for Endowment Development & Planned Giving. Crabtree has focused his passions on the raising of Scholarships and Endowments, now totaling more than 375 funds valued in excess of $12.5 million.

Rev. Walliere Pierre is the national coordinator for Nazarene Compassionate Ministries in Haiti. In the days following the devastating earthquake in Haiti in early 2010, he became the voice of the Haitian people to Nazarene around the world. Pierre is a member of the Nazarene General Board and in 2009, he was honored at the Nazarene General Assembly with a “Heroes Among Us” award for facilitating the launching of feeding programs, youth soccer leagues, agricultural projects, micro-lending programs, medical clinics, AIDS prevention activities and water projects.

The speakers at the Undergraduate ceremony were two graduating students, Philip Cox and Melinda Meisner.

The speakers for the Professional & Graduate Studies ceremonies were Mr. Robert Sandlin, Graduate of the Masters Degree program and Dr. Tom Jones, the President for Oklahoma City Rescue Mission.

Founded in 1899, Southern Nazarene University is a private, Christian, liberal arts university-a service of the Church of the Nazarene.
