The Academic Center for Excellence (ACE), Disability Services at Southern Nazarene University will host a week of awareness titled “In Their Shoes” as part of the Disability Awareness Week from April 14th – 17th, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. daily on the campus of SNU located at 6729 N.W. 39th in Bethany, Oklahoma.
The ACE Department hopes to raise awareness and empathy for people with disabilities.
“As a Christian community with an increasing disability student population, Disability Services feels it is an essential component of our program to raise awareness for the daily struggles that students with disabilities encounter. We are hopeful that all students will embrace this opportunity and will come away from the various events with a greater understanding of what it means to be a person with a disability.” said Erin Toler, Director of Disability Services at Southern Nazarene University.
Each day will focus on a different type of disability:
Tuesday the 14th – Mobility Awareness, wheel chair obstacle course and athletic mobility activities.
Wednesday the 15th – Visual Impairments, Oklahoma League for the Blind will be here with lenses, obstacle course, and blindfolded baseball.
Thursday the 16th – Hard of Hearing / Deaf-Speech reading activities, finger spell signing, closed captioning, and a visit from Dog Ears (dogs for the hard of hearing).
Friday the 17th – Learning Disabilities – Information fair on a variety of disabilities, with activity sheets that mimic the disability.
