Who is eligible to participate in the Student Service Program?

Students who have completed two semesters at SNU.

How do the chapel credits work while in SSP?

A student who participates in the Student Service Program must attend at least 14 chapel services. It does not matter which chapels you attend, as long as you go to at least 14 within that semester.

Any student who participates in SSP is not allowed to obtain Enrichment Credits.

How do the SSP credits work?

In order to get full credit for SSP, students must volunteer for at least 22 hours over the course of the semester. Students should volunteer on a weekly basis at the same time each week whenever possible, because the organizations and their clients benefit from consistency.

Any student who participates in SSP is not allowed to obtain Enrichment Credits.

How do I join the Student Service Program?

Email Rhea Woodcock at rwoodcoc@snu.edu. You must apply by the first full week of classes in semester in which you want to serve.

When can I sign up for SSP?

It is recommended that you sign up the semester before you serve (i.e. if you want to participate in the spring semester, sign up during the fall semester). However, you may sign up as late as the first full week of classes in the semester in which you want to serve.

What organizations qualify?

In order to partner with the Student Service Program, an organization must be a nonprofit organization and serve a population that is, in some way, underprivileged (e.g., low income, ethnic minority, racial minority). We seek serious reflection by students regarding the systems that contribute to poverty and injustice,

Students may choose from a list of organizations with whom we have previously partnered, or may volunteer at another qualifying organization upon approval of the SSP Director.

Can I volunteer at an organization that isn’t on the “Qualifying Organizations” list?

We want you to volunteer where you feel your passion lies. If that organization is not on the “Qualifying Organizations” list, please to contact the SSP Director (rwoodcoc@snu.edu) to seek organization approval.

Can I volunteer on campus for SSP?

No. SSP is designed for students to make an impact in off-campus organizations in the greater Oklahoma City area.

What if I work at a non-profit or ministry organization already?

A paid position cannot count toward service credit. However, if you work more hours than what you are paid for (e.g., you are paid for 10 hours, but work 15 hours) then you may count extra time toward SSP, providing the organization already qualifies for SSP (see What organizations qualify?).

Do I have to be a Christian to participate in the Student Service Program?

No. We invite any student who is willing to serve to join SSP. Additionally, the organization at which a student volunteers is not required to have a Christian affiliation.

Why should I participate in SSP?

People join SSP for a lot of reasons; some want to learn more about an issue, others want to give back, and some are simply searching for something. Any of those reasons are fine. We want you to be in SSP because we think gaining a larger perspective of the world is important.
