Responsibility: Facilities Management: the Quetzal Education Research Center
(QERC) is to be kept clean, in good working order and properly
appointed. Appropriate staffing may be secured to facilitate this.
Systems will be maintained to facilitate the documentation of
research observations and findings. This includes trail location
markers, templates for recording observations and organized
storage for research observations and results. Maintain QERC
Research Library and Natural History Museum to a high standard
of organization to facilitate access by researchers and members of
the QERC and San Gerardo community.
Community Relations: facilitate annual meeting between the
QERC Director and the Chacon family in order to develop shared
vision to evaluate the effectiveness of QERC in meeting shared
goals, discuss issues identified with regard to the operation of
QERC or its role in the community, ensure that QERC operates in
good standing with the terms of the lease. Meet with the family
at least one other time during the year to update them on the QERC
operations and develop a mutually beneficial partnership. Develop
school programs that educate the children of the San Gerardo
school about the valley environment, environmental conservation,
science, cross-cultural interaction, or other relative topics within
the domain of QERC expertise. Track research in the valley, gather
data (raw and interpreted), and disseminate the products of QERC
research to residents of the valley in general and to the Chacon
family in particular. Develop and maintain a publically accessible
natural history museum designed to educate visitors on the natural
history of the upper Savegre watershed. Publish a biannual QERC
newsletter distributed to the San Gerardo community informing
readers of the ongoing work at QERC.
On-site Coordinator: Coordinate all QERC activities on site.
Manage travel logistics and contacts for educational activities.
Provide orientation for students, establish on-site policies and
procedures for students and guests. Mediator between visiting
faculty and students on discipline problems.
Development and Networking: Actively maintain contacts with
scientific and educational communities throughout Costa Rica.
Provide appropriate services to researchers in the San Gerardo area.
Actively cultivate the exchange of research and educational
resources. Seek to position QERC as the recognized scientific
and educational resource in the Upper Savegre and serve as a
significant research and educational clearing house for students of
the upper montane cloud forest ecosystem with an eye toward
making QERC a meaningful participant in the provision of information
research and education.
Qualifications: Committed to the Lordship of Jesus Christ and the mission and
core values of the Church of the Nazarene.Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences,
Ecology, Environmental Sciences or related area with at least two years
experience in a relevant field. A graduate degree in biology or related field is
preferable. Excellent communication skills (with faculty, students, and local
residents. Conversational fluency in Spanish required.
Salary: Commensurate with experience and in harmony with the SNU
salary structure.
