Student Athletes Host Fundraising Event for Angel Tree Ministry

Last month, the Student Athlete Advisory Council at Southern Nazarene University hosted an event at the Claud and Betty Cypert Athletic Complex to raise money for the Angel Tree Ministry.

Angel Tree is a ministry that reaches out to the children of inmates and their families with the love of Christ. This unique program gives students an opportunity to share Christ’s love by helping to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the families of prisoners.

“We wanted to do a fundraiser that would not only allow us to interact with the Angel Tree kids, but raise awareness for the program and raise money to help fund some of the activities that they participate in as well,” said Sharmeda Johnson, SNU grad student and member of the women’s basketball team.

The students cooked hotdogs and provided free chips and drinks for fans at the softball and baseball games vs. Oklahoma Christian.  Donations were accepted and the students provided information about the Angel Tree ministry to spectators. All money donated went primarily for providing presents for next year's Christmas party for the children and for outings and events during the year.

“Being able to participate in the Angel Tree ministry has really allowed me to be able to step-back and appreciate all of the people that have not only helped me get to where I am now, but have made an impact on my life. And that's what I hope my contribution to the Angel Tree ministry has done for some of these kids. Sometimes it's not always about the monetary value that you can provide the kids with, but just the fact that you're taking time out to listen to them and show them that you care can go a lot further than you think,” stated Johnson.

Students at SNU have a long history of involvement in the lives of the needy and disadvantaged.  The School of Business conducts annual events and fundraisers for the Angel Tree Ministry including hosting the students on campus for a Christmas party.
