Dorris Named SNU's Head Coach of Women's Basketball

BETHANY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene University has announced that it has hired Derek Dorris as its Head Coach for Women’s Basketball.

Dorris becomes the 10th coach in the program’s history that features seven NAIA National Championships. He takes over for Lori Carter who spent the last nine years at SNU and left as the school’s all-time wins leader at 219.

“We are excited that Derek and his family are joining the SNU family,” said SNU’s Director of Athletics Bobby Martin. “He will be a great addition the athletics department and will provide great leadership for our women’s basketball program.”

The Southern Nazarene alumnus comes back to SNU after spending the last two seasons at Southmoore (Moore, Okla.) High School where he was named the 2011-12 Mid-State Conference Coach of the Year. He led the Sabercats to the Area Tournament last season. He began his high school coaching career at  Fairview (Okla.) High School where he coached one season before moving to Bethany (Okla.) High School where he was a five-time Canadian Valley Conference Coach of the Year and the 2008 OGBCA All-State Coach. He led the Lady Bronchos to six district titles, two regional titles and five area tournaments over nine seasons.

Dorris has amassed a 152-73 career record as a head coach at the high school level.

“First, I am very humble and grateful to Dr. (Loren) Gresham and Bobby Martin for the opportunity to join the faculty at Southern Nazarene,” said Dorris. “Becoming part of SNU's rich heritage of women's basketball is truly a dream come true. I am looking forward to the great privilege of developing student-athletes academically, spiritually, and athletically.”

Southern Nazarene will begin play in the Great American Conference for the 2012-13 season as SNU transitions in its NCAA Division II Membership Process.
