The growing number of students attending Southern Nazarene University will soon have a new option for on campus housing.
“The SNU Board of Trustees approved moving forward with the issuance of revenue bonds to construct a new 290-bed, suite style residence facility on the Bethany campus.” said SNU president, Dr. Loren Gresham.
The new facility will be constructed at the front of the campus, on the site of the existing Garey Hall. Financing for this $12 million project will be supported entirely by student housing revenues which will be sufficient to cover operational and debt service expenditures. The scope of this new housing facility makes it the largest single construction project in the university’s history. The facility will be ready for occupancy by January 2011.
The need for updated housing options is reflected in the university’s strategic plan. The new living-learning facility will be high-tech and include wired and wireless internet access throughout. The building’s commons area will include space for a major events venue, a smart classroom, offices for student services, and large living areas. Moving forward at this time with a high-quality construction project like this further addresses the SNU strategic planning commitment to invest in the overall student experience and in campus infrastructure and facilities.
“Plans for this new facility were developed with great care over many months, included input from faculty, staff, and students and incorporates many best practices found in student housing nationwide” said Dr. Scott Strawn, Vice President for Student Development.
The building is designed to last by integrating steel frame and concrete construction. It will become a permanent anchor of the SNU and 39th Expressway streetscape. While it served the university well for many years, Garey Hall was in dire need of a major commitment of resources, simply to keep the building viable for the future.
“Because of the way it was designed and built, Garey reconstruction would have been particularly expensive to consider” reported Donna Nance, CPA, Vice President for Financial & Business Affairs.
With SNU’s long-standing concern for the care of creation, special attention has been given to insuring the building is sustainable in design, and the building is designed to benefit students from every classification, from freshman to senior. Having this additional housing option will greatly benefit student recruitment and retention efforts, which remains a top priority for SNU.
SNU has contracted with Cornerstone Development of Edmond, OK to manage this project. As construction progresses, local sub-contractors will be used whenever possible. Architectural services are being provided by Rick Brown & Associates and the general contractor is Naylor Construction of Dallas, TX.
