Southern Nazarene University’s Library is working to expand access to a wide range of resources, most notably as a contributing partner of the Wesleyan-Holiness Digital Library (WHDL). WHDL is a cutting-edge liberal arts library that provides free, open-access online resources in multiple languages to support scholarship, research, ministerial development, and life-long learning from the Wesleyan-Holiness perspective.
WHDL began in 2012 to address a global lack of resources. Representatives from the International Board of Education, Books for Pastors Task Force, Nazarene Archives, Nazarene Publishing House, Regional Education Coordinators, Global Nazarene Publications, and librarians from Nazarene institutions of higher education worked with Longsight, an open-access software developer, to create technologically unique software that accommodates WHDL’s needs, one of which includes uploading resources to the Library in multiple languages from any geographical location.
WHDL’s goal is to provide a seamless language experience for end users and contributors, while accommodating individuals who speak and provide resources in a myriad of languages, accepting contributions from a variety of locations (many with limited bandwidth), utilizing a clean and easy-to-use software system, aiming to provide open-access to as much high-quality information as possible, and building and sustaining a community aligned with a core set of values.
There are currently 700+ items uploaded representing 40+ languages from 6 global regions. Currently, the WHDL Collection Development team is primarily focusing on collecting and digitizing Course of Study material. Concurrently, that team is gathering other items like primary and secondary Wesleyan-Holiness resources as well as archival documents for uploading. Soon, the WHDL will be able to host resources from its Nazarene schools and SNU will be an actively contributing partner.
Katie King, SNU’s Library Director and WHDL Marketing Committee Chair, says, “The Wesleyan-Holiness Digital Library is one of the most meaningful projects on which I have the honor of working. I'm grateful to be a small part of a project that has global impact for Christ.”
Southern Nazarene University is proud to have a Library team that both recognizes the value of and participates in denominational and inter-denominational collaboration, not only for the betterment of the Nazarene denomination and other Wesleyan-Holiness traditions, but also so that we may more effectively share Christ with the world.
