(EDWARDSVILLE, ILL.)---Southern Nazarene junior, Spencer Berkley, finished 5th in the 400-meter dash finals on Saturday, May 23, at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in Edwardsville, Illinois. Berkley, who has been stellar in the 400 meters throughout the season and especially at nationals, posted a time of 47.85 in the finals to take 5th out of 8 runners.
With the effort on Saturday, Berkley, out of Berryville, Arkansas, earns his first NAIA All-American honor, as the top six in the finals were all named All-Americans.
“I am very proud of Spencer and the rest of our nationals qualifiers,” said SNU head coach Billy Miller. “Spencer had an outstanding championship performance and earning All-American honors is a great achievement for Spencer and our program. “
SNU freshman, Dante Campbell, competed in the Discus Throw on Saturday, finishing 17th in his first NAIA National Championship appearance. Campbell, who was the Sooner Athletic Conference Champion in the Discus, registered a throw of 146-00 on Saturday.
In women’s action, SNU had two individuals compete in the Shot Put as Steffie Littlefield, a junior from Edmond and Malerie Merry, a senior from Woodward, each vied for honors in the Shot Put. Littlefield finished 20th after registering a throw of 41-06.00 and Malerie Merry followed in 28th with a throw of 37-06.00.
In Kansas City, MO. - Southern Nazarene University’s track and field program had three individuals earn NAIA Scholar Athlete honors on Saturday. SNU’s Aubrey Thompson, Kevin Beaver, and Cody Lidster all earned Scholar Athlete honors.
All three of SNU’s Scholar Athletes earn their first Scholar Athlete award this season. Aubrey Thompson, a sophomore from Mustang, is a nursing major, Kevin Beaver, a junior from Mustang, is a Biology major, and Cody Lidster, a senior from Dalhart, Texas, is a Business Administration major.
With the conclusion of competition on Saturday, SNU’s track and field season and overall sports season officially comes to a close on a high note.
“I just want to reiterate how proud I am of everyone who competed this weekend at nationals,” added Miller. “We represented SNU extremely well and everyone had a great nationals! This has been a great weekend for SNU track and field and I want to thank all team members and assistant coaches for a great season. This is a great sign for next year!”
